ACEPCLIM: Social acceptance of public policies for climate change mitigation
ACEPCLIM is a project funded by the CSIC's LINCGLOBAL call (LINCG25036) coordinated by Elsa Varela.
For effective climate action, public policies must have broad public support. However, the lack of such support represents a key obstacle to the transition to a low-carbon economy. Understanding the social acceptance of climate mitigation and adaptation policies is fundamental to designing effective and legitimate strategies.
ACEPCLIM aims to create an Ibero-American network for collaboration, dialogue, and scientific dissemination for the comparative study of social preferences for global change mitigation policies. This will allow for the definition of joint strategies to strengthen the role of the public sector in designing more effective and socially acceptable policies to address the challenge of climate change. This overarching objective will be developed through four national case studies (Spain, Argentina, Colombia, and Mexico).
Objectives
ACEPCLIM is structured around three interconnected specific objectives:
1. To analyze the institutional framework of climate change mitigation policies and strategies.
Achieving this objective will provide a solid foundation for understanding the institutional context and mitigation strategies in participating countries, facilitating subsequent analysis of the social acceptance of public policies and private initiatives in this area.
2. Study the social acceptance of public policies for climate change mitigation.
This objective aims to study the level of social acceptance of different public policies for climate change mitigation, also considering socioeconomic variables, values, and attitudes as explanatory factors for acceptance.
3. Define action and communication strategies for public policies on climate change mitigation to improve their support and adoption.
This objective explicitly capitalizes on the lessons learned in the previous objectives, condensing them into communication briefs and a policy brief developed for each country and aimed at policymakers and managers at the national and regional levels. This brief contains key recommendations for improving climate change mitigation policies and their communication to the public.
ACEPCLIM is coordinated by Elsa Varela Redondo, a senior scientist with the Environmental Economics Group (GEA) at the Institute of Public Goods and Policies of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC).
Paola Ovando and Christoph Kiefer, also members of the GEA, are also participating.
