Biografía

Jorge M. Fernandes (Viana do Castelo, Portugal, 1986) is a Ramón y Cajal Fellow since January 2023.

Jorge holds a Ph.D. in Social and Political Sciences from the European University Institute, Florence. Prior to joining IPP-CSIC, Jorge was an Assistant Research Professor at the Institute of Social Sciences, University of Lisbon (Portugal) and a Postdoctoral Fellow at University of Bamberg (Germany). 

His research interests revolve around political representation and its various declinations, including, the effects of electoral systems, political competition, gender, and geography. His work has been published in many journals, including The Journal of Politics, British Journal of Political Science, Comparative Political Studies, European Journal of Political Research.

He co-edited several books, including The Politics of Legislative Debates (Oxford University Press, 2021) and The Oxford Handbook of Portuguese Politics (Oxford University Press, 2022).

Jorge has held visiting positions at the Minda de Ginzburg Center for European Studies at Harvard, University of California San Diego and the Robert Schuman Center for Advanced Studies, EUI.

From May 2025, Jorge is the PI of the ERC Consolidator Project “SEE: Representation in Proportional Electoral Systems”.
